Date
Sighting
26.12.2007 Basil goes walkabout - seen wandering around the 4th hole during the cross-country comp.
Small flock of long-tailed tits spotted on back 9.
8.12.2007 Fox spotted on the 4th - not seen him for a while!
Minor gull invasion due to the wet conditions...
14.11.2007 This is the time of year to keep an eye out for migrating birds, particularly Redwings and Fieldfares, which may also fly around in mixed flocks.
Male Bullfinch seen near the 13th tee, reported by the ever-vigilant Keith Ashcroft.
03.11.2007 Nice close-up of a Kestrel hovering over the 18th fairway, which then perched in one of the tall trees on the right-hand side of the fairway.
20.10.2007 Quite a few flocks of migrating geese flying over the course at this time of year (low flying, noisy Canada Geese made Superjoe Gill miss a putt on the 7th the other week - well, that's what he said). The other geese are likely to be Pink-Footed Geese, Whooper Swans or Bewick's Swans. Thousands of these geese can be seen at Martin Mere every year, which is also where the Autumnwatch programme is based (starts on 5th of November). See links above.
11.09.2007 Grey Heron seen flying over 18th and Green Woodpecker heard in woods behind the "Owls".
25.08.2007 Buzzard seen flying over the fifteenth fairway (spotted by Tom Briggs).
19.08.2007 Tawny Owl heard calling in the woods to the right of the 15th during the Norman Knight comp! (couldn't spot it though!)
31.07.2007 Not only did Fred Lomax come second in todays senior comp but he also heard a Green Woodpecker in the woods near the 11th!
Most of the links have now been re-routed to the RSPB site, where you can also hear the bird calls - many of you will not doubt realise you have heard Green Woodpeckers before without realising what it was!
28.07.2007 Basil the fox spotted in the bunker on the 4th carrying a dead rabbit
27.07.2007 Buzzard seen hovering over the eight fairway (reported by an ever-vigilant Keith Ashcroft).

28.06.2007 Get out there you twitchers - Whitethroat in the brambles on the 16th hole!! Thanks to Fred Lomax for the report. Whitethroats love scrubby terrain and there's plenty of it around the 16th!

The Captain was delighted to see a fine specimen of a thrush perched on his golf bag. Rueing the fact that he had left his camera at home, he was not quite so delighted when he returned to the bag and discovered the thrush had left him a "present" splattered all down it.
04.06.2007 Couple of Pied Wagtails seen pottering around the 9th green.
31.05.2007 Ever wondered why so many divots appear not to have been replaced? This is often because of magpies flipping over the replaced divots looking for food. Several magpies were observed doing exactly this on the 10th fairway yesterday evening.
Kestrel seen again around 1st/10th fairway area.
30.05.2007 Numerous sightings of the fox again at the weekend.
Return of the kestrels?? Kestrel spotted on course on Tuesday evening!
Greater spotted woodpecker seen flying over the 13th tee.
Do you know the difference between Nidicolous and Nidifugous???

A nidicolous (or altricial) nestling is naked, blind and helpless after it hatches. Most songbirds, woodpeckers and pigeons are nidicolous, such as Blackbirds.

A nidifugous (or precocial) nestling is down covered and active shortly after hatching and can leave the nest if necessary. Most game birds, ducks and geese are nidifugous, such as a Mallard chick.
19.05.2007 Several sightings of a young fox on the course during today's competition!
Numerous swifts, swallows and house martins seen flitting around the course!
10.05.2007 "Passerines" seen on golf course - what's a passerine?!
01.05.2007 Fox seen running across 4th & 9th fairways during committee meeting!
27.04.2007 Frog invasion?? The pond next to the 15th green is full of tadpoles - watch out for frogs attacking unsuspecting golfers soon!
The bluebells are also out in full force in the woods around the course (right of tenth green, left of 14th green etc.), which are a great photo opportunity! See picture gallery for a couple of recent snaps.
